The resolution was adopted by a vote of 33 in favour, China and Eritrea voting against and 12 abstentions, including India, Armenia, Bolivia, Cameroon, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Namibia, Pakistan, Senegal, Sudan, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.
Favouring a greater role for New Delhi in the global arena, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Sunday backed its bid for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council and sought expansion to G-8 to include India in it in view of the "new realities".
"The world sees India as a growing opportunity. I expect it to have more role in world affairs."
The sources said France's position has not changed and is very clear -- the Kashmir issue must be settled bilaterally. This has been stated on several occasions and will continue to be reiterate to partners in the UN Security Council, they added.
